Photofacials: Intense Pulsed Light
What is a Photofacial?
Intense pulsed light is a new and exciting way to improve and rejuvenate the skin. Unlike a laser, which emits one specific wavelength of light, IPL emits a broad spectrum of light with each pulse. The treatment provides an average of 70 percent improvement in the signs of sun damage (redness, brown spots, broken capillaries). There may also be improvement in wrinkles, pore size and flushing of rosacea.
What Should I Expect During the Treatment?
A cool, soothing gel will be applied to the treatment area and a glass prism will then be placed over the affected area. An intense flash of light, or pulse, is flashed through the prism where it is directed at the treatment area to rid you of your complaints. Treatments are usually about 45 minutes.
What About the "Downtime" of this Procedure?
The skin usually stays red for 1-3 days like a mild sunburn and there may be a little bruising if you are treating large broken blood vessels. Brown spots usually flake off within 5-7 days. Most people can go to work right away. You must protect yourself from the sun after this treatment with SPF 30 or higher.
Are There Any Complications from this Procedure?
Although rare, blistering or healing with dark or light spots may occur in certain skin types. Dr. Haydel will help decide if you are a good candidate for this procedure to help avoid any possible complications.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
The face, neck, chest and back of hands are the most commonly treated areas because they have the highest sun exposure and sun damage.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The initial consultation will help guide how many treatments are needed to get good cosmetic results. The average amount is 2-3 treatments spaced a month apart.
